BIOGRAPHY
Professor Magee is an international award-winning Consultant Surgeon practising at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
After graduating from the University of Liverpool, he completed further surgical training at Whiston Hospital. He was then appointed as Senior Anatomy Demonstrator to the University of Liverpool alongside Chris Halloran (Now Professor of Pancreatic Surgery). In 1996 he joined the Mersey Deanery SHO rotation in surgery and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He then joined the Department of Surgery at the University of Liverpool where he was awarded a MD for his research into proteins and pancreatic cancer.
He completed further surgical training across hospitals in North West England and was awarded a KeyMed scholarship and the Gravitas (now Phoenix) Bariatric Surgical Fellowship. During his time as fellow he was introduced to revisional and complex surgery. He was awarded the BOMSS Scientific Prize in 2010, for his work on body image perception in the severely obese. He is a recipient of an ASMBS Intergrated Health Prize and an IFSO poster prize.
His work has been presented at numerous national and international meetings and has been awarded multiple Poster of Distinctions . Following his bariatric fellowship he was appointed a Consultant Surgeon at Wirral University Teaching Hospitals and Honorary Consultant Bariatric Surgeon at University Hospital Aintree.
As well as his clinical work he is actively involved in research and training. He has over 150 published articles in peer-reviewed journals and has written for Wirral Life and Shire Magazine. As a Consultant he has guided national prize winning work in sarcopenia and surgery (RSM John of Arderne medal).
He is the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical tutor for Wirral University Teaching Hospital and co-director of the Wirral Academic Surgical Programme which has delivered 22 Masters degrees by thesis and 25 fellows have gained NTNs in General Surgery. The programme was shortlisted for the NIHR West Coast research awards in 2025.
He is a member of the editorial Board for the journal Obesity Surgery and reviews for other journals including BJS.
In 2018 he was appointed a Fellow of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (FFSTEd) and is committed to the training and mentorship of the next generation of surgeons.
For the last seven years he has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Chester- an honour he holds close to his heart- and lectures regularly to undergraduates and postgraduates there.
He has co-written a number of MSc Modules in bariatric and general surgery and has been appointed as MBChB lead in Suregry for Chester Medical School.
