Dr Fanning joined Chester Medical School in September 2025 as the Year 4 Clinical Lead for the new Postgraduate Entry Medicine (PGEM) programme. With more than two decades of clinical and educational experience, he brings a strong commitment to developing high‑quality, medical graduates who are prepared and ready for practice. Following a review of the staffing within the medical school, a new post of Deputy Clinical Dean has been created and, in recognition of his educational leadership experience, Dr Fanning has been appointed to this role on an interim basis. 

Before joining the institute, Dr Fanning was the Theme Lead for Clinical Skills at the University of Liverpool. In this position, he worked closely with the Clinical Skills team, and the wider School, to design, deliver, develop, and quality‑assure clinical skills teaching and assessment across the five‑year undergraduate medical curriculum.

His earlier educational leadership roles include serving as Foundation Training Programme Director at the Countess of Chester Hospital and Director of Medical Education for SAS doctors within Health Education England North West (HEENW). Across these posts, he has contributed extensively to postgraduate training, faculty development, and the advancement of clinical education standards.

Alongside his educational leadership, Dr Fanning is an experienced clinician with 22 years of practice as an anaesthetist, with a particular interest in obstetric anaesthesia. His dual expertise in clinical practice and medical education underpins a learner‑centred approach that emphasises professionalism, patient safety, and the development of confident, capable future doctors.
