RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research explores the relationships between environmental sustainability, security, and governance examining how resource constraints, biocapacity loss, and environmental degradation generate systemic risks for societies, institutions, and economies. I apply strategic foresight and risk assessment frameworks to understand how these pressures translate into threats and opportunities, and to develop evidence-based strategies for mitigation, resilience, and transition. A core thread of my current work is connecting research to implementation through place-based partnerships supporting rural communities adapting to flooding and climate change, and regional innovation programmes working with SMEs to bring environmental products and services to market. I am committed to participatory and collaborative research methodologies, including participatory action research (PAR) and smart specialisation, which I use to build cross-sector partnerships that drive meaningful change across business, government, and civil society. My earlier work at Cranfield University developed expertise in material criticality, resource risk, and the security dimensions of environmental change, where I applied shade shift analysis a structured approach to identifying how strategic landscapes evolve under pressure to defence and intelligence contexts. This continues to inform my current collaborations with the Environmental Security Research Group at King's College London, NORRAG, and the Geneva Graduate Institute, exploring climate security, sustainability governance, and academic freedoms.

I supervise MSc and Doctoral students across climate action, energy transition, decarbonisation, social cohesion, socio-economics, sustainable composites, green skills, and benefits realisation, and welcome enquiries from prospective researchers working within the fields of environment, security, and governance.
