BIOGRAPHY
Dr Katya Bennett is a Consultant in Clinical Genetics at the Liverpool Centre for Genomic Medicine and Cardiovascular Genomics Lead at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. She has extensive experience in rare disease diagnostics, cardiovascular genomics, and the clinical application of whole genome sequencing. Dr Bennett works across multidisciplinary teams to support the diagnosis and management of individuals and families affected by genetic conditions and leads regional service development in genomic medicine, including the Rare Disease and Gene Discovery Service at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Alongside her clinical role, Dr Bennett is MBChB Specialty Lead in Genomic Medicine and contributes to undergraduate medical education at Chester Medical School. Prior to her medical training, she studied Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, where she also completed a DPhil in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology. She is keen to draw on her scientific background to help medical students understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underpin modern clinical practice.
Students are welcome to contact Dr Bennett with questions about the molecular basis of disease, genomics in clinical practice, rare diseases, cardiovascular genetics, career pathways in clinical genetics and genomic medicine, or opportunities to explore how genomic approaches are used in patient diagnosis and management.
